Ruckus at Sandringham

Christmas shock for the Queen

‘It was an incredibly distressing sight… There was blood everywhere.’ So said an aide who witnessed the ferocious attack by Princess Anne’s bull terrier Dotty on Pharos, one of the Queen’s dogs. ‘The poor corgi was howling,’ continued the report, ‘and there was nothing HM or the Princess could do to get the terrier off. It sank its teeth in and shook the corgi around.’ The attack happened as the doors of the house swung open and the Queen’s dogs ran downstairs barking. Although the Queen heard the ruckus, she was hampered from hurrying to the scene by recent knee surgery, and while Pharos received rapid veterinary attention, his condition deteriorated fatally.

The date was Christmas Eve 2003. The previous year, Dotty’s owner had been in court after the dog bit two boys in Windsor Great Park. As a result of the incident, Princess Anne was not only fined £500 but became the first member of the Royal Family to acquire a criminal record for allowing the dog to run out of control.
